Institute of Banking Personnel Selection commonly known as IBPS has been formed under the Government of India to conduct recruitment exams and promotional tests for various government allied organizations. In 1984, when Personnel Staff Selection (PSS) under National Institute of Bank Management was converted into autonomous Institute of Banking Personnel Selection.
About IBPS
Institute of Banking Personnel Selection commonly known as IBPS has been formed under the Government of India to conduct recruitment exams and promotional tests for various government allied organizations. In 1984, when Personnel Staff Selection (PSS) under National Institute of Bank Management was converted into autonomous Institute of Banking Personnel Selection.The services of IBPS exams are availed by public sector banks, RBI, Insurance bodies and development banks in rural areas like NABARD. There was an exam IBPS Combined Written Exams (IBPS CWE), a Common Written Examination conducted independently and separately for Clerical and Officer level jobs for different PSU Banks. In 2011, it was decided that a single exam will be conducted for all PSU banks. Then three major exams came into existence:
- IBPS PO (for Probationary Officer Jobs in PSU Banks)
- IBPS Clerk ( Clerical Jobs in PSU Banks)
- IBPS SO (Specialist Officer Jobs in PSU Banks).
The IBPS exams span each year between August to January. The general sequence of IBPS notifications starts with IBPS – PO, followed by IBPS – Clerk and then IBPS – SO. Below is the list of all major IBPS exams in 2017-18:

In 1984, Personnel Staff Selection (PSS) under National Institute of Bank Management was converted into autonomous Institute of Banking Personnel Selection. IBPS-PO exam is conducted to recruit personnel for 20 Public Sector Banks. This is one of the most sought-after exams as all PO level recruitment in Public Sector Banks, except SBI, are done through this exam.
The notification for IBPS-PO is usually released in August.
Preliminary exam of IBPS-PO is usually conducted in the month of October.
Main exam of IBPS-PO is usually conducted in the month of November.
The results of preliminary exam are usually announced in October and that of Main in December.
The following are eligibility criteria for IBPS-PO:
IBPS-PO exam comprises two phases. A. Phase I: Preliminary Examination consisting of Objective Test for 100 marks will be conducted online. The test will have of 3 Sections (with separate timings for each section) as follows:

Each correct answer carries 1 mark and each wrong answer attracts a penalty of 0.25 marks.
B. Phase- II: Main Examination will consist of Objective Tests for 200 marks and Descriptive Test for 25 marks. Both the Objective and Descriptive Tests will be online.
(i). Objective Tests (200 marks): The objective test of 3 hours duration consist of 4 Sections for total 200 marks. The objective test has a separate timing for every section as follows:
